College Summit
College Summit is a non-profit organization whose mission is to increase youth college enrollment rates from low-income communities. They partner with 180 high schools across the United States to provide summer workshops and activities within the school year and provide a student-driven college-going culture. College Summit provides teachers with professional growth and onsite training to lead their classes. The organization has grown to help 50,000 students a year by working with high schools, teachers and students within low-income communities in the 12 states. They help students select schools, complete college applications, write personal statements, and navigate financial aid. J.B. Schramm is the founder of College Summit. He founded College Summit in 1993 while he was conducting a teen center in the basement of a low-income housing project in Washington D.C. He started the program after working as an academic adviser at Harvard University. President Obama awarded College Summit a division of his Nobel Prize Award in 2010. It was then honored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce with an annual award for the nation's finest corporate-nonprofit partnership. The program mainly targets students Schramm defines as "better than their numbers," students whose grades and test scores are low might be hiding first-rate college material. College Summit organizes workshops across the country—60 in total—where volunteer counselors, including former College Summit participants work with students on issues such as test prep and financial aid. The heart of the workshop is training students on how to complete the admissions application essay or personal statements. College Summit's goal is to raise college application and enrollment rates. Every summer College Summit hosts a four-day workshop on a college campus for rising seniors in high school. Once they are finished they become the peer leaders of College Summit in their school. Students become role models and mentors to their classmates in order to create a college-going culture in communities where it never before existed. Their jobs as College Summit peer leaders are to motivate their classmates through their college application process.
